The Green Movement: Nothing Really New
It seems that anywhere one looks now there is some new “Green” product, service, or attitude. If one looks back through the centuries however, one can see that several centuries BCE, many ancient philosophers realized how important it was to understand and to live in harmony with nature. Lao Tzu, the father of Taoism for example, in his book the Tao Te Ching explained how humanity should learn to live in harmony with nature if it was to avoid disrupting the natural order.
Although approaching the world from a different mind set, the Greeks, half a world away, came to a similar conclusion. Xenophon, in his book, Estate Management, saw that there was a practical reason for understanding nature. As he put it, “We all know that as we are beneficent toward nature, it becomes beneficent toward us.”
There are many other examples of other philosophers and writers who were well aware that if we abused or ignored nature, we did so at our own peril. I found a good summary of the “Green Movement” in America can be found in the WebeEcoist. But regardless of when and where the movement started, the important thing is that the “average” citizen in the US and around the world is finally starting to understand and realize what is at stake. We can only hope that American and world leaders realize the urgency of the various ecological problems that we face, and take measures to support the green wave that may ultimately help save the planet and our species.
