Work from professional house painters in Roswell

Roswell House Painting Specials

Fall is coming and with it comes holiday parties, family gatherings, and house guests.   While seeing your family and friends is a fun and joyous occasion, nothing is more irritating than you in-laws’ opinions of ability to maintain a house hold.  We all know what I’m talking about; the murmurs and “looks.”

The most cited reason for not painting during Fall and Winter is the weather.  This is a logical objection because traditional paints don’t perform as well as during cold and wet conditions.  Technology has changed this.

The new generation of paints and coatings are developed specifically for harsher climates.  Paint manufacturers design new products with the weather in mind because an all-weather paint allows them to sell product all year long.  During R&D, they test these products to stand up to the harsher winters of the northeast and midwest.

This works out beautifully for us in the south.  Our winters are like spring compared to New York’s.  Consequently, GreenWave’s Roswell house painters are able to paint the entire year still delivering the uncompromising quality that our clients expect.

We understand that the holiday season can be expensive, and to help, GreenWave Solutions is offering Fall painting specials.

Throughout Fall, we are giving 15% off of all Roswell house painting services.  Call to schedule your free estimate today!

Alpharetta House Painting Specials

As summer makes way for fall, the days get shorter and the weather gets colder and wetter. This doesn’t mean that painting season is over. It means that painting conditions change.

Many of the new coatings have been developed specifically for cold and damp weather application. When manufacturers design new products, they create products that can withstand the harsh winters of the northeast and midwest. Compared to those climates, Metro Atlanta seems like a tropical paradise. This is only good news for Alpharetta house painters.

Because these revolutionary coatings are designed for such harsh climates, GreenWave Solutions’ house painting crews are able to work throughout the entire year and still do the professional jobs that our clients expect.

So whether you are getting your house ready for holiday visitors or have just been putting off the paint job, now is the time to get this off of your “To Do” list.

We understand that the holidays can be expensive, so we are offering a 15% off special on all Alpharetta painting services.  Call today to schedule your free estimate!

How to Smooth a Popcorn Ceiling

Today’s Article is going to tackle one of the more tedious projects with which homeowners face:  Removing popcorn or stipple texture from a ceiling.

This is not a difficult process. It is, however, extremely messy, labor intensive, and tedious. It also requires good finishing skills for professional results. I am going to make this a step by step explanation.Gather all of your materials and supplies:

1. Gather your materials and supplies.

  • spray bottle with water
  • scrapers
  • plastic and construction paper
  • sand paper and poles
  • trash bags
  • dust masks
  • eye protection
  • paint brushes
  • drywall compound
  • finishing knives
  • paint

2.  Prepare the area.

This is going to be a dusty, messy process so proper preparation is imperative.  Move all the furniture out of the room or into the center of the room.  If the furniture stays in the room, cover it with plastic and tape the plastic.  Cover all floors with plastic or construction paper.  Also, cover A/C intakes or turn of the HVAC altogether.  The drywall dust is so fine it will go into the ventilation and get spread throughout the building.

3. Start removing the texture.

Both stipple and popcorn texture are water based products.  The easiest way to remove them from your ceiling is by spraying them with warm water and letting the water seep into the texture.  After a few minutes, the texture should be soft enough to be scraped off.  How easily the texture comes off depends on many variable and can’t be accurately determined until you start scraping.  Continue removing the texture as described about until it is all gone.  You are done for the day.  Let the ceiling dry and get some rest because your neck and shoulders are probably sore.

4.  Refinish the ceiling.

This takes some skill.  There is no doubt that the ceiling looks like it needs help.  Get your drywall compound and finishing knives ready.  I recommend buying a 5 gallon pail of joint compound or the bag mix so that you can make as much as you need.  Now that you have your finishing tools ready start refinishing the ceiling.  Remember that the less compound you use, the less sanding and dust you will have to deal with in step 5.  After you have finished applying drywall compound on the ceiling, take lunch and give the compound time to dry.  Dry time depends on temperature, humidity, and the type of compound you used.  I recommend 45 minute compound.

5.  Sanding and touch up.

Now comes the really messy part.  Put on your dust mask and eye protection.  Sand the entire ceiling until it is smooth.  If there are areas that don’t look right, touch them up with more compound and re-sand it after it dries.  Once you have the ceiling smooth, dust it with a damp rag or paint brush to get the loose dust off of it before step 6.

6.  Prime and paint.

You’re almost done!  I know that step 6 says, “Prime and paint”, but you may not have to prime.  If you are using flat paint, which I recommend on ceilings, then you can paint directly on the finished ceiling.  If there are water stains, then they do need to be primed using an alkyd or shellac primer/sealer.  After the paint dries, do a walk through and address any areas that need to be touched up.  If everything looks good, then proceed to the last step.

7.  Clean up.

This should be a welcome step by now.  Clean up all of the plastic and paper, put the furniture back and enjoy your nice smooth ceiling.  Hooray!

If you just got through smoothing a textured ceiling you are probably thinking, “I am never going to do that again.  Next time I am going to hire a professional.”

Atlanta Faux Painting & Finishing

Faux Painters in Atlanta

Wallpaper has been out for a long time.

While you can do a lot with good color schemes, sometimes it is nice to have some extra decorum in your home.  A great way to achieve this is with faux painting.  There are literally dozens of faux finishing techniques that all have different appearances.  Faux Painters are the true artists in the paint contracting world.  Faux finishes are special because each one is one of a kind and can never be reproduced exactly.  They also look really cool!

Faux finishes vary from technique to technique.  Each technique renders a different appearance.  Venetian plaster looks like a marble or stone look.  Some ragging techniques make the walls look like leather or cloth.  Here are some popular and beautiful faux finishing techniques in which GreenWave Solutions specializes:

  • color washing
  • sponging
  • ragging
  • metallic
  • glazes
  • antiquing
  • murals
  • Venetian plaster
  • stripping
  • combing
  • texture
  • suede
  • sandstone
  • Our faux painting specialist is skilled in all faux finishing techniques

Faux finishing requires more skill than “regular” painting.  Faux finishing requires an eye for art, as well as a skilled hand.  Some faux finishes require more skill than others.  Ragging, for example, is easier to do than painting a mural.  Venetian Plaster is extremely labor intensive.

To learn more about faux painting techniques, call or email us and our Atlanta faux painting specialist will provide a consultation.

GreenWave Solutions also does faux painting in Alpharetta, Milton, Roswell, John’s Creek, Buckhead, Midtown, Sandy Springs, Dunwoody, and Brookhaven.

Color Consultations in Atlanta

GreenWave Solutions is excited to announce that we are enhancing our Atlanta color consultations service!

We have added a professionally accredited interior designer to our team.  I want to specify she is an interior designer and not an interior decorator. The difference is that an interior designer has to go to college, earn a degree and accreditation, and have intimate knowledge of the art and science associated with design.  An interior decorator just has to get some business cards made and tell people that they have to rearrange their furniture.

GreenWave Solutions’ interior designer graduated from The Art Institute of Atlanta with a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Interior Design.  The Art Institute of Atlanta’s interior design program is recognized as one of the nation’s elite.  She has over 7 years of interior design experience including designing homes for some of the southeast’s largest builders.  She is adept and passionate about color consultation, remodeling, and even computer aided design software suites.

Our consultation rates are industry competitive.

Tannin Stain, Painting Company, House Painters, Atlanta, Alpharetta, Sandy Springs, Dunwoody, Brookhaven, Buckhead, Roswell, Marietta, Milton, Decatur

How to Avoid Wood Tannin Bleed from Knots

We completed a project last week that gave us some trouble.  Because this isn’t the first time I’ve seen this problem, I felt that it warranted an article so others can avoid this problem.  The problem is tannin and resin bleeding through knots and “self-priming” stains and paints.

Many of the new paints and stains boast “self-priming” properties.  The selling point is that “it requires fewer coats and products to finish the job so you save time and money.”  While this sounds awesome, it is misleading.

No current product that says “paint and primer in one” or “self-priming” is going to perform as well as separate primers and paints.  For simple applications such as interior painting on previously painted substrates, these products perform fine; but when getting into applications in a more demanding environment, they fall short.

I specifically speaking about wood stains that say “self-priming to prevent tannin bleed.”  My instinct is to ignore these statements and use a stand alone alkyd wood primer or shellac primer on wood, but this time I went just with the stain.  We used package white.  The painters sprayed and back rolled the product per manufacturers’ specifications.  It looked beautiful at first and everyone went home.  When we went back the next morning, every knot on one side of the fence had bled through the stain.

To be fair, this was the side of the fence that had the sun hitting it from first thing in the morning until about 2pm.  This heat causes the tannin and resin to be more active.  However, the data sheet should have said something about this.

I told the home owner I was unhappy with the product’s performance and I wanted to prime and put another coat.  Our client obliged so it time to research.  I have heard horror stories of people applying 3, 4, and 5 coats to still have the knots bleeding through.  I didn’t want to have a story of my own so I got on the phone with technical support.  They told the “self-priming” properties are weak and that it is still advised to prime.

I went with what worked with even the most “knottiest” wood (get the pun? knotty vs. naughty).

Shellac-based primers are the best primers for sealing in stains.  Shellac comes from the lac beetle.  I don’t remember how they beetle makes it, but I am positive that all shellac comes from this little bug.

We see shellac in our everyday lives.  The easiest example is on pills.  The shiny coating on pills or the plastic parts of capsules are examples of “food-grade” shellac.  Now that I provided a visual of what shellac is, it should be simple to see why it is such an effective sealer.

When shellac primers dry, they effectively seal the stain beneath a layer of plastic.

What makes these primers such great sealers is the same thing that makes them ineffective primers for exterior house painting.  Because shellac based coatings create a solid, rigid coating, they are only specified for “spot exterior” application.  This is because of the movement that exterior substrates exhibits due to expansion and contraction from temperature fluctuations.

For this reason, we spot primed the problem knots with an aerosol primer and repainted.  If the bleeding was throughout the wood, we would have opted for an exterior alkyd primer designed for bare wood.

After everything was completed, the fence looked beautiful, our client was happy, and GreenWave Solutions did another good job.  This is why we are consistently rated the best painters in Atlanta.

Exterior Painting Application Methods

What is the best way to apply paint?

This is another one of those questions that can only be completely answered with the question, “What are you painting?”  In an effort to keep this article from turning into a book, I will answer this question for the homeowner who is getting residential exterior painting.  We will assume that the house is previously painted and the paint is not peeling, cracking or having any other coating failures that will require getting into primers and more advanced painting techniques.  The paint is just oxidized, faded, and it is time to repaint.

Houses are usually constructed from either wood, brick, siding, stucco or a combination of these compounds.  Despite a few exceptions, a high quality exterior acrylic paint will work on any of these substrates provided the existing coating is in good condition.  Paints designed for stucco are thicker and have more elastomeric qualities in order fill hair line cracks and allow for movement.  Some paints designed for wood are self-priming to prevent tannin bleed.

So what is the best way to apply paint to the exterior of your home?

Some painting contractors boast “all work done by hand.”  While this sounds wonderful because of the allure of “handmade” and “handcrafted”, it is not really the best way to have things painted.  Here are the pros and cons of hand brush application of paint:

Pros:

  • No over spray or mess
  • Get into tight areas without having to tapes or cover with plastic or paper
  • No need for respirator or mask
  • Fast, easy clean up

Cons:

  • Slower (higher labor costs or more time painting)
  • Thinner coating of paint (Will wear out and need repainting sooner)
  • Uneven finish (brush marks shows)
  • Manufacturers recommend spraying most coatings

The other option for exterior house painting is by using a professional spray machine.  I don’t mean a Wagner paint sprayer you get from Lowe’s for $100.00, I mean a professional Graco, SpeeFlo, or Titan machine that can cost anywhere from $1000.00-$30,000.00.  Spraying paint using the right machine, gun, and tip will render a smoother more even finish than brushing by hand.  In some instances, like painting stucco or applying wood stains, it is necessary to back roll the coating after spraying it on to push the paint into textured surfaces.  Here are the pros and cons of spraying paint (assuming that a skilled professional is using the equipment):

Pros:

  • Thicker layer of paint (lasts longer)
  • Smoother finish and appearance
  • Faster (saves labor costs)

Cons:

  • Creates over spray so protecting eyes, nose, mouth, and property is required
  • Uses more paint due to thicker coating and over spray loss

As a professional painting contractor, I encourage spraying paints whenever possible.  It just renders a better final product.  There are some situations where spraying paint is not feasible due to population, wind, laws, etc.  If you have any questions about painting send the professionals at GreenWave Solutions an email and we will be happy to help you.

Which Paint Sheen to Choose?

As a painting contractor, I am constantly asked by my clients which paint sheen is best. This is one of those questions that doesn’t have a single, correct answer.  Every sheen has pros and cons associated with it.  For this article I am focusing specifically on interior, residential applications.

Before you can decide what the best sheen is, you must understand environment in which the coating is exposed.

Here are the factors that you must consider when choosing a sheen:

1.  How much wear and tear will the coating be exposed to? Are their pets or children that frequently and/or roughly touch the walls?  Is it a high traffic area like an entry way or mud room?  Will the area be exposed to abnormal conditions like steam, smoke , or grease?  If the walls are going to get a lot of wear and tear or will require cleaning, you will need something with a sheen.  Paints with sheen are more durable and washable.  Some manufacturers have “washable flats.”  These coats have outstanding durability with a very slight sheen.  Most of them are as good as advertised.  They are, however, expensive.

2.  In what condition are the walls? Do the walls have bad repair work done?  Are there nail pops?  Is the drywall hung and finished poorly?  If you answered yes to any of these, you should opt for a flatter sheen paint.  The flatter the sheen, the fewer imperfection you will see.  This is because light bounces off of imperfections at odd angles and if you have a sheen, you will see a glare at the imperfection.

How dark is the color? Darker colors tend to be unforgiving when showing lap marks and surface imperfections.  Paints with higher sheen have these same limitations.  That is why I don’t recommend using higher sheen paints for dark colors.  (I am referring to walls with this statement.  In some applications, this is not true).  This isn’t a rule, but my expert recommendation is “the darker the color, the flatter the sheen.”

Well that’s about it.  I’m sure we can think of other factors that can influence paint sheen, but the three above cover 95% of all interior, residential projects.

To sum up

Flatter sheen paints:

Pros – Better at hiding imperfections, touching up, give walls a softer, smoother look.

Cons – Mar and scuff easily,  not washable, tend to fade faster

Higher sheen paints:

Pros – Durable, washable, holds sheen and color

Cons – Show imperfections, laps marks, and glare

Atlanta Faux Painting & Finishing

Faux Finishes

Atlanta Faux Painting &amp FinishingFaux finishes in painting allow the person to create textures or effects that resemble surfaces such as stone, suede, crackled paint, etc., that enhance the appearance of the room. There are hundreds of faux finishes that can be selected from, depending on the design style that you want to achieve in your home.

Some of the most popular faux finishes include rag rolling, stippling, and stone finishes. Each of these faux finish techniques can be accomplished with your imagination and just a few materials.

For stone faux finishes start by making sure that the surface you are applying the faux finish technique to is clean, dry and free of any debris. It is a good idea to get a picture of the type of stone, (including colors and patterns) that you want in advance so that you have a reference while you work. Next you will need to apply a base coat in an off white color for the foundation of the faux finish . Once this dries, mix together the primary color of your stones, using a latex paint, with two parts of a latex glaze. This faux finish will now need you to use a rag or paper as an applicator to dab on the mixture to create the texture of your “stone”. Then, using cardboard or heavy paper, create a stencil for your “stones” and trace them onto the surface, taking care with placement of the “stone” so that they seem natural to the eye. Finally, your faux finish will need you to follow the lines of the outside of the stones with a natural color paint, creating the appearance of a mortar on the surface. While this faux finish technique may take some time, depending on the area to be covered, the results will create a beautiful faux stone finish that enhances any decor.

As with any faux finish technique it is advisable to first practice the technique process on a spare board or surface that can be discarded when you are done. Not only will the practice time make sure that you are comfortable with the real application of the faux finish , it will allow you to make any adjustments in color if necessary before you begin the work.

Paint Your Ceiling to Give Your Room a Brand New Look!

Ceiling Painter AtlantaWhen you decide to paint the interior of your house the first things that come to mind are the colors you want to paint your walls and how will you can make the walls look decorative and make the rooms in your house look more attractive BUT, do you ever give any thought to painting the ceiling?  Well, painting your ceiling may sound odd, but by doing so you can make the room look and feel different and stylish.  Painting your ceiling can change the entire look of your house.

Ceiling painting can magically transform the room and tie together the color palette, plus it makes decorating even easier.  For example:  If a room has high ceilings then a darker color paint can make the room look warm and cozy, because,  if you want the room look larger you can paint the ceiling with a lighter color.  Remember, it is not necessary that you paint your ceiling according to the color of the walls, though it can definitely make a room feel larger or smaller and add an element of style and flow to the entire house.

As you decorate and paint each room of your house, you should really pay attention to your ceilings. Remember to follow these important rules when you decide to paint your ceilings:

  • Before beginning to paint the ceiling, it is very important to clean it with soap and warm water.  Dust in your house can accumulate on your ceiling, especially if you have ceiling fans or AC ducts con the ceiling.  Ceiling tiles should be cleaned with a mixture of bleach and water.  Properly cleaning your ceiling prior to painting is imperative so that the paint can be coated smoothly and evenly.

  • Before using paint on the ceiling it is important, as with painting any surface, to properly apply a coat of primer to the ceiling. Applying a coat of primer to your ceiling will make sure that your coating of paint will dry properly, smoothly, and evenly.

  • It is always better to stay consistent while you are painting. For the best results always brush or roll in the same direction so the paint will coat evenly on the ceiling.

  • Before you actually begin painting the ceiling it is very important to have these important items handy:  Latex primer, paint, a bucket and/or roller tray, paint roller, bleach, spray bottle, water, rags, newspapers and/or a drop cloth.  These are the essential tools to have when beginning to paint. It is also a good idea to have a drop cloth that can cover the entire surface area of the floor in the room whose ceiling you wish to paint.

  • With regards to the color you should use to paint the ceiling take into account the color of the walls, furniture and decorations, check out a variety of color palettes and do some “test runs” by painting small areas of the ceiling where it adjoins the wall.  Most of all USE YOUR IMAGINATION to make your room look unique!
