House Painting Contractors in Alpharetta GA

Summer is not officially here according to the equinox, but we’ve past Memorial Day and that means summer in Georgia.  This summer, GreenWave Solutions is going to offer exclusive Alpharetta house painting specials!

Alpharetta, one of Atlanta’s most affluent suburbs, has wide open spaces blanketed with subdivisions full of beautiful homes.  Many of these houses are between 10-20 years old and need the attention of GreenWave Solutions Alpharetta painters.

Exterior house painting is a simple and inexpensive way to preserve and maintain the beauty of your home.  It starts with a thorough pressure washing to remove dirt, debris and other surface contaminants.  After pressure washing, we will perform any carpentry and replace rotten wood or siding.  Then we prepare everything for painting.  This includes caulking gaps and joints, scraping peeling painting, priming bare areas, filling holes and patching imperfections.

Once the house is ready, it time to paint it.  GreenWave Solutions applies exterior coating using professional paint sprayers, just as the manufacturers recommend.  Spraying applies a thicker, smoother coating which translates to a longer lasting job for our clients.  Don’t be fooled by the “we do all work by hand” line.  It may sound good, but machines do better than humans when operated by a skilled professional.

Why do we use bulldozers to move dirt instead of using 300 guys with shovels?

At this point, we are almost done beautifying your home.  We perform quality inspection walk through with our client and project manager.  At this point, we fix any touch ups and tie up all loose ends.

Finally, we clean up and leave our job site how it was when we got there; except of course for the magnificent, freshly painted house.

This isn’t the only way to perform exterior painting in Alpharetta, but it is the way that GreenWave Solutions has a nearly perfect customer satisfaction record.

Winter is over, pine pollen is over, April showers are over and that means it’s time for exterior painting and staining.  It’s also time for a bunch of fun things, but since we are a painting company that is what we’ll focus on.

The U.S. has experienced an economically turbulent decade.  The 2000’s began with one of the largest construction booms we’ve seen and was followed by an equally significant crash.

During the boom, 10’s of 1000’s of homes were built in Atlanta, Alpharetta, Milton, Sandy Springs and the rest of the metro areas.  Most of these home were painted using inexpensive, construction-grade paint which lasts only 5-6 years.

It’s been 10 years and it’s there are thousands of homes around Atlanta that need a fresh coat of some high quality paint.  GreenWave Solutions was founded by Atlanta natives that understand the elements that our home’s must stand up to and we are ready to help get everyone’s homes fresh and beautiful.

Our skilled painters specialize in applying all of the new ‘green’ coating and know get the most of the space-age acrylic resins.  GreenWave Solutions’ exterior residential painting projects both look beautiful and last a long time.  We are so confident in our work that we warranty all of our projects.

Primers are important to professional painting companies, interior painters, exterior painting.

What is the Purpose of Primers?

If you have ever been into a paint store you probably heard something about primers.  Whether you were asking about how to paint something or reading informational pamphlets, you learned that primers are important.  When talking to clients, I realize that “normal” people don’t know the exact definition of primers.  This article will help correct that.

What does a primer do?

Prepares a substrate to accept a top coat.

This is a short but vague answer.  A better answer is extrapolated when another question is asked.

What do you need the primer to do?

Answering this question will better define for what primers are used.  There are many different types of primers, each having a different purpose.  Here are some common applications for primers.

  • Promoting adhesion – This is important when painting hard, glossy surfaces like glass, plastic, metal, or porcelain.  If you painted directly on these surfaces, the paint would scrape off.  Bonding primers make these surfaces paintable.
  • Sealing stains – Painting over water, smoke or oil stains requires priming to prevent the stains from bleeding through the paint.
  • Sealing wood – In order to prevent tannin and knots to bleed through paint, you must prime raw wood.
  • Changing colors – When making drastic color changes, priming can save a coat or two of paint.
  • Smoothing substrates – Extremely rough and porous surfaces, like cinder blocks, are primed with a very thick coating so that the paint has an even surface.
  • Equalizing porosity – Primers are used to create a uniform porosity so that paints will have a uniform finish.  An example of this new drywall.  The drywall, tape, and finishing compound all have different porosity and require  priming if using a non-flat paint.
  • Preventing/Re-mediating rust  – There are primers that prevent rust on ferrous metals and others that reform rust into an inert metal.
  • Industrial applications – There are numerous specialty primers used for industrial painting applications.  These uses are too specific and technical for the purposes of this article.  If you have questions using these primers, you need to read the manufacturer specifications.

This concludes primers 101.  If you have more questions, email us using our contact form.

Alpharetta House Painting Specials

As summer makes way for fall, the days get shorter and the weather gets colder and wetter. This doesn’t mean that painting season is over. It means that painting conditions change.

Many of the new coatings have been developed specifically for cold and damp weather application. When manufacturers design new products, they create products that can withstand the harsh winters of the northeast and midwest. Compared to those climates, Metro Atlanta seems like a tropical paradise. This is only good news for Alpharetta house painters.

Because these revolutionary coatings are designed for such harsh climates, GreenWave Solutions’ house painting crews are able to work throughout the entire year and still do the professional jobs that our clients expect.

So whether you are getting your house ready for holiday visitors or have just been putting off the paint job, now is the time to get this off of your “To Do” list.

We understand that the holidays can be expensive, so we are offering a 15% off special on all Alpharetta painting services.  Call today to schedule your free estimate!

Exterior Painting Application Methods

What is the best way to apply paint?

This is another one of those questions that can only be completely answered with the question, “What are you painting?”  In an effort to keep this article from turning into a book, I will answer this question for the homeowner who is getting residential exterior painting.  We will assume that the house is previously painted and the paint is not peeling, cracking or having any other coating failures that will require getting into primers and more advanced painting techniques.  The paint is just oxidized, faded, and it is time to repaint.

Houses are usually constructed from either wood, brick, siding, stucco or a combination of these compounds.  Despite a few exceptions, a high quality exterior acrylic paint will work on any of these substrates provided the existing coating is in good condition.  Paints designed for stucco are thicker and have more elastomeric qualities in order fill hair line cracks and allow for movement.  Some paints designed for wood are self-priming to prevent tannin bleed.

So what is the best way to apply paint to the exterior of your home?

Some painting contractors boast “all work done by hand.”  While this sounds wonderful because of the allure of “handmade” and “handcrafted”, it is not really the best way to have things painted.  Here are the pros and cons of hand brush application of paint:

Pros:

  • No over spray or mess
  • Get into tight areas without having to tapes or cover with plastic or paper
  • No need for respirator or mask
  • Fast, easy clean up

Cons:

  • Slower (higher labor costs or more time painting)
  • Thinner coating of paint (Will wear out and need repainting sooner)
  • Uneven finish (brush marks shows)
  • Manufacturers recommend spraying most coatings

The other option for exterior house painting is by using a professional spray machine.  I don’t mean a Wagner paint sprayer you get from Lowe’s for $100.00, I mean a professional Graco, SpeeFlo, or Titan machine that can cost anywhere from $1000.00-$30,000.00.  Spraying paint using the right machine, gun, and tip will render a smoother more even finish than brushing by hand.  In some instances, like painting stucco or applying wood stains, it is necessary to back roll the coating after spraying it on to push the paint into textured surfaces.  Here are the pros and cons of spraying paint (assuming that a skilled professional is using the equipment):

Pros:

  • Thicker layer of paint (lasts longer)
  • Smoother finish and appearance
  • Faster (saves labor costs)

Cons:

  • Creates over spray so protecting eyes, nose, mouth, and property is required
  • Uses more paint due to thicker coating and over spray loss

As a professional painting contractor, I encourage spraying paints whenever possible.  It just renders a better final product.  There are some situations where spraying paint is not feasible due to population, wind, laws, etc.  If you have any questions about painting send the professionals at GreenWave Solutions an email and we will be happy to help you.
